MINI SPRINT RESULTS

Placerville Speedway
September 26, 2009

With the temperatures climbing once again above 100 degrees Green Motorsports headed to Placerville for the final Midget Lite race of the season.

Under sweltering conditions the racers suited up and took to the track for hot laps.

The track recently added some new clay to the surface and it seemed to be holding the moisture better than we were.

As Cory lined up for the heat race we watched as maneuvered around the oval track and put on a great race and finished in 2nd place. With little time between the heat races and our main event there wasn’t time to cool down before crawling back into the driver’s seat.

The main event had 15 cars for the finale’ and had very few cautions from green to checkered. Cory finished in 6th place for the event and 11th place for the season and a look of relief was on his face as he realized the season was over.

A much needed rest will be welcomed from the busy schedule we have had this year between the 3 race cars and 23 weekends of racing in the 09 season.

I heard Cory say, “Let’s go fishing!”  That sounds good to me too!

This week finds us back up north in Marysville, CA.
After last weeks run in the mini Cory took the injectors and had them cleaned and flowed and just as he had suspected they were blocked, some as much as 60%.

With the injectors now clean and the new motor running better Cory decided to invite Scott Males to drive this weekend to help him sort out some of the handling problems he had been experiencing in the car and to get a second opinion.

Hot laps Scott ran second quickest of the night so we knew the motor was good now but he too was complaining about it not turning and pushing up the race track.

Scott ran the heat race where he started in 7th in the heat and finished in 3rd. But the car was still pushing up the track so they made some changes to the panhard bar and added some additional stagger and were ready for the main.

Scott started the feature event in 8th place and by lap 4 had moved into 4th place. A yellow flag came out on lap 4, which was good for us as we needed to catch the leaders now we had worked our way through traffic. But as Scott rolled around on the yellow the official noticed he had a right front tire flat and black flagged him to the work area. Cory ran to get a tire and they changed it as quickly as possible but just as they were ready  to get him back on the track they field went green and we were shut out.

Disappointment was evident as they headed back to the trailer. But hopefully we had accomplished what we set out to do, correct the handling problems and test out the new rebuild on the motor. Both seemed to be corrected. So it was a good night. Thank you Scotty for working with us once again, it was fun to get everyone back together.

Then next race is co-sanctioned with the California Lightning Sprints from So Cal. It will be ran at Bakersfield Speedway on September 12th. The team is still deciding if they are making the trek 270 miles to our south.

But we are certain that we will be there for the final race of the year at Placerville Speedway on September 26th. Come on up and join us for the finale of the season.

Well the last couple weekends we have been drag racing so we returned this weekend to the world of dirt and open wheels.

My Uncle Royal was here visiting us from Washington state and we talked him into joining us for the race in Placerville this weekend. Cory said after the race it was nice to have a cheering section.

The weather was extremely hot again as the temperatures soared to above 103 during the day making for some pretty sweaty wrenches.

This is the first time Cory has had the car to the track since the rebuild on the motor. Hot laps didn’t give much help in view of how the car would run as the track was extremely wet and greasy making it difficult to get traction. Cory also noticed the temperature gage wasn’t working so a quick trip to the parts trailer that is “conveniently” (that’s how they acquire our money) located in the pits and Cory bought a new temperature gage and they installed it before the heat race.

At the start of the  heat race we could tell the car was just not quite right. It was slow coming out of the corners and just seemed to be lacking power. After finishing 6th Cory brought it back to the trailer and began making some changes before the main. He added a new fuel map to the computer and then changed the gear.

The main event was much improved and we could tell that the car was running much better as she began to pull once again coming out of the corners.  Cory started the main in 12th position and finished in 7th for the night. After the race Cory said the car  was better but was still not great as she was popping and getting a little overheated so we may have some clogged fuel injectors.

It was very nice to have my uncle join us for the race as we enjoyed his company very much. Maybe we can talk him into coming back soon for a couple more.

Meanwhile Cory has a little work to do to get the car ready for next weekend at Marysville Raceway Park but as we always say, “Anytime you can roll your car back into the trailer in one piece, it is a good night of racing.”

After a difficult weekend at Antioch, Cory spent most of this week repairing the car and getting it ready for Placerville this weekend.

Cory took the car to the track for hot laps and returned with a smile commenting that “She is running super great!”

That should have been a warning because whenever something runs super great….it usually breaks... which the 53c did right at the start of the heat race.

The cars were just rolling around getting into position when the motor made a loud noise and seized up. The tow truck pushed Cory back to the pits where they began searching for the problem. They found that the motor had several bent intake valves and we were finished for the night. Now the difficult task of diagnosing why it happened so we can rebuild the motor.

The race was extremely difficult for our club as we started a field of 16 cars and only 6 cars finished the race. Most were due to crashes and flips but we know of a couple of others who also lost engines.

There will be a lot of wrenching going on to get everyone back to the track.

We are taking a break from the mini sprint racing for the next couple of weeks to go drag racing. Next weekend will be Randy in the dragster at Sacramento Raceway and the following weekend will be Cory back in the funny car for the Fox Hunt at Sacramento Raceway.

Come out and watch the drag races with us and we will see you again in Placerville on August 29th for the next mini sprint race.

Watch the Heat Race

Lemoore Raceway
July 11, 2009

As dusk settles over the raceway at Lemoore, Cory sits atop his car waiting for the start of the heat races.

Lemoore Raceway is located about 200 miles south of Sacramento in the desert sands south of Fresno. This is the smallest track that we have raced on at only 1/6 of a mile surface. With the desert heat of over 100 degrees the track conditions were dry and slick.

Through hot laps and qualifying each team was searching for the setup to get them around the track but with this small of a racing surface and no moisture there wasn’t much that could be done to improve the conditions.

Cory slid around the track and finished in 7th place for the heat. Returning to the pits made a few more adjustments as we waited for the main event which didn’t start until after 11:00 pm that night. Although the weather had cooled down into the 80’s the track was still extremely dry as they lined up for the 30 lap race.

Cory started in 14th place and had just passed a couple of cars when a fellow driver failed to slow for turn 3 and ran right up and over Cory causing them both to stop as they had to lift the other car off of Cory’s rear tire. With minor damage to both cars they were able to continue the race. Cory now starting in the back once again began working his way up through the pack as several other spins and bumps brought out the yellow flag several times. Cory managed to avoid several of the spinouts and had worked his way up to 9th place when he too caught the sand that had also captured many others that evening going into turn 1 and looped the 53c. This being Cory’s second caution of the night was sent to the infield by the officials to watch the remainder of the race instead of participate. Only 8 cars of the 16 finished the race but it was some exciting racing right to the end. Cory finished in the 10th position after all the "dust" had settled.

A very late night as Green Motorsports loaded up and headed back to Sacramento arriving around 4:30 am we all dropped into bed for some rest.

Dry and dusty conditions made it hard to see the cars on the track.

HOT! HOT! HOT!

As we headed up the hill to Placerville the temperature was at 104 degrees and that is just plain hot.

This is a wingless race so they drivers don’t even get the shade from the wing to help them. We knew early on that the track was not going to be very good with the hot temperatures but even during hot laps the cars were throwing sand on the track.

By the time the heat races and main event rolled around there wasn’t any moisture to be found anywhere, not in our bodies, not in the air, and certainly not on the track.

With very slick conditions every team was looking for that magic setup to help get them around the track. Cory was very loose in the heat race and also got tagged in the rear end which bent the Jacob ladder straps so he repaired the straps and tightened it up for the main event. 18 cars took to the track for the feature event and Cory began the race in 13th place. Trying to keep our eye on Cory as he raced around the track was a task in itself. With all the dust flying it was almost impossible to see the cars from the grandstands. Slowly Cory began working his way up through the field and after 20 long laps finished in 7th place for the night.  Cory did a great job of racing by avoiding several spinouts and although he got clipped going into turn 3 near the end of the race he continued as there was some hard racing going on for track position.

Exhausted from the heat and soaking wet from perspiration, Cory didn’t take long to get out of his driver’s suit and into his shorts following the race. It was a beautiful drive on the way home at 12:30 am, as it had cooled to a balmy 80 degrees by then.

We have a break from the racing schedule now until July 11, which will take us to Lemoore Raceway about 200 miles south of Sacramento. Let’s hope it cools off before then.

June 13 has always been a special day since it is Cory’s birthday but this was an extra enjoyable day being able to celebrate at the race track.

Many of Cory’s friends were able to come to the race so this added to the fun also.

The track conditions were not the best we have seen, during hot laps it was very dry on the straight-a-ways and very muddy in the corners. This makes for some tricking driving not to get turned upside down as the car can catch coming into the curves. During the hot laps the chain was jumping hard and afraid that it would throw it, Cory pulled off early.

We tightened the chain and sent him back out for the heat race but the chain was still jumping hard and he had no power coming out of the corners and finished in 5th place.
Upon further examination they found that a couple of teeth on the gear had worn down so they changed the gear, changed a couple of tires, and tightened it up for the now very slick and dry conditions that we were facing him for the main event.

Cory started the main in the 8 position and was now running much improved with the chain problem corrected but the slick conditions still made for some tough driving. There were only a couple of cautions and on lap 18 a fellow driver lost his muffler causing him to be disqualified and Cory finished in 5th place for the race. After passing tech for his 5th place finish we headed back to the trailer to begin the celebration. With a birthday cake and enough food to feed everyone the party began back at the trailer and we all enjoyed sharing the day with all of Cory’s comrades. The party continued until way after midnight as we celebrated Cory’s birthday and a great top 5 finish.

Congratulations Cory and Happy Birthday!

Antioch Speedway

June 6, 2009

With much anticipation we returned to Antioch Speedway as this track was Cory’s nemesis last year due to several crashes that plagued the 53c.

But with much determination and a newly designed track Cory took the 53c onto the track for hot laps and to test it out. What he found was a much faster track than before with longer straight-aways and higher banked corners.

Cory’s draw was the second heat race and as he took to the track we held our breath, but to our surprise he came out like a rocket, flying around the track. For 10 straight laps he drove the car hard barely lifting at the corners and finished in 2nd place for the heat.

When we returned to the trailer Cory said, “I don’t think that I have ever felt as good in the car as I did tonight!” We were all excited as we prepared for the main event and knew Cory would do well.
The event before us had numerous crashes and delayed our race by almost an hour as the drivers sat strapped in their cars waiting to take to the track.
Finally as our cars entered the track and began lining up the 53c stalled on turn 4 and coasted to a stop. As the tow car began pushing Cory off the track we all were very disappointed. When they surveyed the car for the problem they found that the fuel pump relay had burned up causing the stall.

Could have been, should have been, would have been… those were in our thoughts.

Cory seems to have beaten the nemesis for crashes but this track has still eluded him a great finish in the main. But we will be back! We will prevail, we will eventually be victorious here I am sure.
So for now we move on to Marysville Raceway next weekend where we will also celebrate Cory’s 31st birthday so come join us for the fun.

Placerville Speedway

May 9, 2009

Last weeks race scheduled for Marysville was again rained out as the winter weather seems to be hanging on late this year. This gave Cory a little extra time to make all the repairs on the mini sprint from the damage at Marysville 2 weeks before. He replaced the rear brake rotor, master cylinder, new rear arms and also added a new front axle and put the wing back on too.

So this weekend found us heading up the hill to Placerville Speedway and one of Cory’s favorite tracks to run on. The weather was perfect, about 84 degrees and no rain!

This is our first winged race of the season and always a lot of fun.

Cory started the heat race in the 3rd position and was off to a fast start but found out quickly that the track was very greasy and spun the 53 going into turn 4. A fellow driver tried to avoid Cory but failed and hit Cory in the left rear. Cory was able to continue but now starting at the back of the pack had some ground to make up and only 5 laps to do it in. Cory quickly passed a couple of cars but knew the car wasn’t handling well since the hit in turn 4 and on the final lap almost tagged the front stretch wall and packed about 100 pounds of mud up under the front end.He finished the heat in 7th place and returned to the pits where they discovered that the hit had bent the jacobs’ ladder straps which explained the handling problems. They fixed the straps, pried out all the packed in mud and put a new set up in the car for the greasy conditions and Cory started the main event in the 14th position. The main again took its toll on several of the cars with a couple of flips and a few hard crashes but Cory drove well and moved up to the 7th position as the checkered flag flew. It was a good night of racing when you finish up 7 spots in the main event and roll your car back into the trailer with no major damage! This will also move Cory up in the points a couple of places. Good job Cory and Green Motorsports. We will see you in Antioch on June 6th for the next event.

Watch the Heat Race from Placerville

Marysville Raceway Park
April 25, 2009

Well the season has begun for the mini-sprint.

Since our first scheduled race in Placerville got rained out we took the car to Marysville on Monday of this week to do some test and tune on his new fuel system and make sure the motor was running well. After working out a few bugs we were ready for the race at Marysville Raceway. This is a first of several non-wing races scheduled for this year.

We had 20 cars show up for the race tonight which is a good turnout for us in the beginning of the year. After mud packing and hot laps Cory was ready for the heat races. Cory started the heat race in the 8th position. As the green flag waved Cory was working his way up through the pack when a car spun out bringing out the yellow flag but the car behind Cory failed to see the caution and rear ended the 53c hard going into turn 4 bending the rear bumper. The race continued and after 8 laps of driving hard finished in 3rd place for his heat.

The main event was filled with anticipation as the cars took the green flag. Before 1 lap was completed a car spun out and they had to restart. After restarting they made it 1 lap when a fellow driver hit the wall hard coming out of turn 4 causing a red flag and long wait as it took some time to retrieve the unconscious driver from his car. After the race was restarted there were several yellow flags as cars spun out on the track but Cory was again working his way up through the pack when he spun between turns 1 and 2. Failing to avoid the spin out another driver clipped Cory’s front end as he came around the turn. Cory now starting at the rear of the pack had just began working his way back up when he felt the rear end drop and could feel the brake rotor hitting the seat from behind. Fortunately a caution came out for another spin and Cory stopped the car and flagged for the tow truck. After further inspection back at the trailer they found that the rear heim joint had pulled out of the arm. The heim joint is an extremely rigid articulating joint, commonly known as a ""spherical rod-end,"" used in precision linkage. Heim joints are often used in the suspension links of race cars because they locate wheels very precisely. This left the rear end floating and the brake rotor had come up and slammed the driver’s seat. We are still not sure if the car being rear ended earlier in the evening had caused the damage but it appears likely. Overall Cory had a good night of racing and still managed to finish the main in 10th position for the evening.  Good job Cory.

So we have some work to do before a return to this same track next weekend for another non-wing race. But we are used to that…after all that’s racing.

See you next weekend at Marysville!
