53C Mini Sprint

Green Motorsports is a full service shop for our race cars. We do all of our own motor work, including rebuilds, alcohol conversion, fuel mapping, and updates.  We also do our own chassis work and maintenance.

Getting ready for the 2009 racing season Cory decided to convert the Honda CBR over to alcohol.  Opting to do the conversion himself this will save about $1500. Here are some pictures of the recent alcohol conversion.

History of the Mini Sprint

Here is a little history of the mini sprint since we have owned it.
In the beginning back in 2006 Cory had no experience in sprint cars or circle tracks. He had always been a drag racer. But his love for racing and the thrill of watching these guys compete made him decide to buy the mini sprint. Cory turned to his buddy, Scott Males for information and help. Scott was born and raised in Australia and was a side car champion a few years back. Scott had come to the United States to serve as crew chief for a couple different World of Outlaw drivers so he brought a lot of experience to the table. Cory was an experienced mechanic and worked on the funny car every week but funny cars don't have stagger...so he needed to learn a few things. They decided that Scott would drive the car and also show Cory the ropes of the setup. With little in the way of finances and a borrowed trailer they began their adventure near the end of the season but knew they would gain from getting started as soon as possible. The following year Scotty drove the car the entire season in 2007 all the time prepping Cory to get in. Cory in the meantime was learning a lot about everything in the dirt track world. By the time the 2008 season rolled around Cory was ready to take on the driving duties and also took over as crew chief.

When the mini sprint was first purchased it was  red. and in need of some repairs.  They were running Yamaha R1 motors with an ART chassis.

One of the first things that Cory did was have it powder coated black. Because Cory and Scotty wanted to make the race that weekend they went with the white wing and the number 2. But their first race at Petaluma speedway proved to be adventurous. Scotty did a great job of avoiding a flipping car but rolled over the mini in the process. After a quick stop in the work area they returned to the race but the rollover had caused a fuel leak and the mini and Scotty caught fire. What a way to start!

Since the mini had rolled, a new wing was in order...this time it is black and donning its new official number
53c. The car is looking good and they are too with a seventh place finish in Antioch.

They continued to have problems with the car, lost a muffler then ran over it and knocked a hole in the oil pan, then blew  the motor in Reno Fernely.

But perseverance brought them to Placerville Speedway with a patched together motor nicknamed "Frankenstein" and the determination to succeed. Anticipation filled the air as the 53c took to the track for the heat race. Scott finished 4th in the heat assuring himself a front row start in the main event. As the excitement intensified the race began with Scotty jumping out to a quick lead. Through several red flags and a long 20 laps he never gave up the lead.  Finally, victory lane was ours.

Next in line was a trip to Reno Fernley Speedway in Nevada where they were doing well until they blew the motor during the main event and did not finish the race. So they threw in a new motor and headed for the final race of the year, a 550 mile trek south to Arizona to compete in the Best of the West race at Mohave Valley Raceway. But severe thunder storms delayed the race for several days and once again motor problems found them heading back to Elk Grove with a race car in need of repairs.
As the 2006 season was finally over this gave them some much needed time rest up in the off season.

As the 2007 season began Cory put in another Yamaha R1, added a new set of numbers to the wing and they were ready for the 2007 season to begin. The year started off well with Scotty winning several of his heat races and taking a 3rd place in the main event in Placerville but motor problems continued to haunt the team. Midway through the year they had blown up their last Yamaha and were forced to sit out the next few races. During this time Cory made new body panels and bought a new hood for the car. He also changed the color to white which gave it a completely new look.  Cory decided to change the motors he had been using, from the Yamaha R1 to Honda CBR 1000's. Hoping these motors would do a better job of getting the mini sprint around the track and not have as many over heating problems. Re-doing the motor mounts and other adjustments to make the motor fit took some time to accomplish. They were able to return to racing and finished the last 4 races of the season.
Although they missed several races they still managed to finish in 10th place in the Championship for 2007. Cory was also awarded the Perseverance Award at the racing banquet.
Like he said when he received it, "I don't think this is an award anyone wants to win!"

The 2008 season Cory took over the driver seat and began his rookie year as a mini-sprint driver.
Cory continued to run the Honda CBR motors for this season and added a Power Commander to fine tune the fueling system.

Later in the season Cory also changed the wing
to white and added new blue numbers.
The car looks clean and classy and fast!
